Central African Republic Reports Latest Mpox Outbreak

The Central African Republic has recently declared an outbreak of the mpox virus, joining the list of affected countries in the region. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease caused by the mpox virus. Pierre Somse reported that infections have now reached the capital, Bangui, after initially being confined to rural areas. He also noted that stigma is causing some families to hide infected relatives, further increasing the risk of transmission. Recent cases have also emerged in Rwanda and Burundi, while a new strain is spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Dr. Somse warned on Monday that the risk of transmission is very high in Bangui due to its dense population. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, spreads from animals to humans and between people through close contact, contaminated objects, and respiratory droplets. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and body lesions, and the disease can be fatal if untreated.
